Ski Jump Event on New Year's Day in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

The Ski Jump Event on New Year’s Day in Garmisch-Partenkirchen is traditionally the second jump event in the International Four Hills Tournament. This tour that it steeped in tradition is one of the absolute highlights of the ski jump season. It started well over 60 years ago in a cosy restaurant in Partenkirchen. Ski jump enthusiasts from Innsbruck and Partenkirchen were sitting together and came up with the idea of starting a ski jump tour. No sooner said than done! The first tour started a few years later and was an enormous success.

The three stations of Partenkirchen, Innsbruck and Bischofshofen were the designated tournament locations. Since a second German location was needed to achieve parity between Germany and Austria, SC Partenkirchen was commissioned by the tour organisations with finding another German location. The SCP initially considered Berchtesgaden, Füssen and Oberammergau. These towns or places already had experience in holding ski jump competitions on the existing ski jump slopes. This meant that there was no need for any new slopes and that nobody from Partenkirchen would have to worry about the organisation. However, the spectator catchment area overlapped with Partenkirchen and the SCP was worried about losing income. This is the reason why Oberstdorf was chosen as the second German location.
